Big Ups and New Year Wishes

Big ups from the Natebot to all those who soldiered though another year, certainly not one without its perils. On my mind at the moment, Mad props to my friends:
  • K for her work firing up Roller Derby in Bloomington despite the breakup of budding Crossroads Roller Derby. Can't wait to come see a 'bout.
  • MD for braving a return to school for a hardcore science degree. And probably a few keg stands - hope your old enough to know better, but young enough not to care.
  • S for her brave return to Texas. It might be Austin but its still Texas - so says this Yankee. I don't mean anything by it - some of my best friends are Texans. See you at SxSW?
  • O and M for getting hitched (to each other no less) and my gratitude getting to be O's Best Man. One of the highlights of 2006 for me. May the new year bring you a bundle of prosperity.
  • T for his founding, continual involvement, prime mover-ment of MATRIX and its slam team, and making Bton just a little more cooler.
  • Dr.W for putting smile on my face with each of his re-rolling the gamemaster posts. Which makes me ask: if an obsession brings joy to another, why should the obsession be curtailed?
  • best hopes to SC for joining the "Reserves"
  • DNL for scratching out a living the good life in NYC. No really, we'll visit soon.
  • and Amanda for putting up with me yet another year.
To everyone else a Happy New Year western hemisphere style. I'm off to get my drink on.

Beat the Devil

Darkness is Death's Ignorance and The Devil's Time.

Papa's Got a Brand New Bag

The BBC reports the Godfather of Soul died Christmas Day at 0645 GMT. I recall the BMW Films' Beat the Devil which The Driver (Clive Owen) drag-races the Devil (Gary Oldman), in order to earn James Brown his soul. Looks like Clive's movie career has kept him from the drivers seat, and for that the Devil finally got his due.

Wikipedia has seen a flash of updates to Mr.Brown's entry since the news. It's amazing how fast the online encyclopedia is updated. Minutes after the announcement. Faster than the BBC web post I believe.

Thanksgiving on the Islands

It's hard to believe a whole month has passed since Thanksgiving. I have some pictures to share from our adventure up in San Juan Island. Amanda and I don't get out of The City very often, so it was a great pleasure to catch a ferry to visit Chris and Darla at their new home. I've known Chris and Darla since my years at Purdue but hadn't seen them for nearly 10 years. They are recently moved to the island, where Chris is the winemaker at San Juan Vineyards. Here's a quote from the Vineyard's site:
We welcome our new Winemaker/Viticulturist, Chris Primus. Chris comes to San Juan Vineyards via Oregon wine country where he was Asst. Winemaker at J Christopher Wines and Maysara. He also managed a 10 acre Pinot Noir vineyard. We'll hear more from Chris in the next few months. We are very pleased to have Chris with us; he is an awesome addition to San Juan Vineyards.

An "awesome addition" -- no small praise! The Awesome Chris treated us to several wines from the winery and a few of his other favorites. I'll ask him to provide a list that I can post here soon. We snapped a few images of the trip for the gallery.
